George Raymond Richard Martin(Bayonne, New Jersey, 20 settembre di 1948), noto come George R. R. Martin e GRRM dagli affezionati, è uno scrittore statunitense fantasy e fantascientifico che ha lavorato anche come sceneggiatore e produttore per Hollywood, e la serie televisiva delle Cronache.

Martin è primo di tre figli. E' cresciuto in una famiglia non benestante e molto impegnata: suo padre era uno scaricatore di porto di natali italo-germanici, e sua madre era di origini irlandesi. Inizia a scrivere molto presto, anche se nella sua infanzia non amava leggere.
Comincia gli studi di giornalismo presso la Northwestern University Evanston, Illinois, dove si laurea nel 1971. Dopo aver completato i suoi studi dirige tornei di scacchi, e lavora come professore di giornalismo presso il Clarke Institute a Dubuque, Iowa (1976-1978).

Martin è stato un prolifico autore di brevi racconti di narrativa negli anni 70 e le sue opere hanno ricevuto numerosi premi Hugo e Nebula. Alla fine di questo decennio ha iniziato a pubblicare i suoi romanzi di successo, dove comincia a diventare popolare con la serie Dying of the Light (Dying of the Light, 1977). Questo successo permette di dedicare la sua vita alla letteratura, dove si mescola generi fantascienza, fantasy e horror.

Dopo un breve matrimonio, comincia a combinare la scrittura con la sua carriera a Hollywood, motivata in parte dallo scarso successo del suo romanzo Rag Armageddon (1983). Nel corso degli anni 80 e i primi 90 lavora come sceneggiatore per numerose serie televisive (The Twilight Zone 1986, La Bella e la Bestia 1987) e come curatore della collana antologica sulla storia alternativa WWII Wild Cards. Nel 1987 pubblica TUF Voyaging, Una raccolta di fantascienza, considerata una delle opere più rilevanti del suo primo periodo.

Nel 1996 Martin lascia Hollywood e si ritira a Santa Fe, New Mexico, dove comincia davvero ad ottenere dei successi con le sue opere, a partire da A Game of Thrones, con il ciclo di romanzi e racconti: Cronache del ghiaccio e del fuoco.
